Iceland Film Festival started on Wednesday but due to WORK!!! :( I only saw my first film today, went with Edda to see
The Ketchup Effect or Hip Hip Hora and as promised here comes the review




Hip Hip Hora! is a coming of age story of Sofie, a 13-year-old girl who gets drunk at her first high school party and some boys take some naked pictures of her. Due to the photos Sofie gets stamped as a whore and is basically stigmatised and all her friends and her dad turn their back to her. In the end after a failed suicide attempt Sofie gets her life back, her dad, her friends and the cute guy.

Casting
Could have been better. The lead was too old to be 13, her dad was to young to be her dad, in fact I first though he was her boyfriend and then I thought he was her older brother, a senior in the high school, the dad was in fact a teacher at the school. Filip Berg as Sebbe was PERFECT, just spot on as an awkward teen, reminding me of my first boyfriend. We were together for 9 months when I was 13. The movie has been compared with
Fucking Åmål , for the first half I could not understand why, except for the obvious that both are Swedish teen movies. Fucking Åmål is brilliant, handling delicate matters in a tasteful but serious way. Now the second half of Hip Hip Hora gives Fucking Åmål a run for its money. It handles the delicate subject matter with humour and lightness, showing that serious subjects can be discussed with humour. The movie raises some thoughts but not as many and as serious as Fucking Åmål. It reminded me that even though I sometimes hate being a 20-something year old, maybe being 13 is and wasn't as easy as I like to think.

Mistake
The ending was a bit cheesy and a little "Americanised", I would have made it differently. Although they almost managed to save the ending with a cute performance starring Sebbe and the ketchup.

Best performance
The ketchup bottle, nobody came even close, but I will have a hard time looking at a bottle of ketchup for a while.


Overall
Good film, a great laugh, ketchup.
