...the PARENTS
Seeing where people come from, both the people and the place tells you a lot about the person. I guess I have always know that ones background shapes us but this weekend I got to experience this. B and me set out on Tuesday after Easter to Voss to see where his roots lie and to meet his dad, his wife and their daughter, or in other words meeting the in-laws!!!!!
For weeks I had been nervous for this visit both since it was the first time I would meet the parents of a boyfriend and second cause we were staying for DAYS, not just Sunday dinner. Assured by many, including my mom that it would be fine as long as I did not overstay my welcome, I met B at Oslo central station about 20 minutes before the train was due to leave. I was packed for all possible weather and had plenty of things to keep me busy, in case, things did not go very well. I was hardly aboard the train when my phone rang and I was invited for a job interview so B had to take care of my bags while I was on the phone. After the call I finally got to sit down on the train and talk to B. As the train moved slowly out of the station and towards the unknown I gave B a gift I had prepared. You see I decided that since he was going to share with me his roots that I should do something of the kind myself. I got him the book Myrin, an Icelandic crime novel and one of my favorites, 2 Icelandic chocolates, Ris and Draumur, and a Heitur Pottur shower gel . (For the Icelanders out there, Heitur pottur is a new Norwegian brand of hygiene products inspired by Iceland. I think they are hilarious, a knock of Blue Lagoon stuff, and the name… When I saw them in the supermarket for the first time I was knocked over with laughter and the TV commercial did not help, of course no one can pronounce this properly) Anyway back to things, after 5 and a half hours the train rolled into Voss and we got off and B started walking, I was slightly confused that we were walking to his dads place since I thought it was outside town and the train had stopped in the center. Thankfully that was just a misunderstanding and his dad lives two streets from the train station, less than 5 minutes walk, although all up hill. We walked straight in the house and I met the whole lot. We sat down, had some tea and bread and talked, moving on to homebrewed beer and more conversation until late into the night. As not to scare you I will tell you that they were all very nice and I had nothing to worry about. The next days were spent, sleeping late, walking all over town, talking late into the night over food and beer and playing monopoly (I hope I did not do any damage by winning). I got to see most of Voss, the center, the folk museum, the place where B lived, where he played as a little boy, where he went to school, I got to see the family farm, meet his uncle and his aunt. B and his dad share a birthday so on Wednesday we had cake and I got to give B another gift, a black sweater and a Rubix cube, both of which he was happy with. I got his dad a couple of jam spoons and Icelandic Noa Konfekt chocolates.
Voss seen from hill above the house In all the trip was very nice and I enjoyed letting B show me around, I enjoyed hearing him tell stories from when he was a kid and seeing how alike he and his dad are. Mostly thought I enjoyed just being around people in a real home and seeing B with his family, as it is so obvious that he cares for them. The trip also gave us time to be together, talk and get to know each other better and in a different way than we have before. So Saturday came all too soon and we left again on the train and returned to Oslo. I was a bit sad to leave him at the station and I miss seeing him everyday. I am almost relieved that I did not get to go to Egypt cause going to Voss was more important at this point in time. I can go to Egypt some other time, maybe with B. After the trip we are stronger and I shure that I want to stay in this relationship.

Seen out the window up the hill, this is the lift taking you up to the skiarea
I am feeling: happy
